Eaton was a longtime resident of Watchung and Somerset County. Settled in Watchung in the early 1900’s and established a working farm
Clergyman in New York City. He served as a pastor in several churches in several states. His background also includes serving as a foreign correspondent for the London Times and Director of the National Service Section, US Shipping Board in WW I.
Elected to the US House of Representatives in 1924 and served the 5th District of New Jersey for 28 years. Republican
Dr. Eaton member of the House of Foreign Affairs Committee, Chairman from 1947-48. As Chairman he achieved the passage of every piece of legislation that he sponsored, including continuation of the UNRRA (a program to aid Greece and Turkey (the Truman Doctrine), and the Marshall Plan. He was held in such high esteem by both parties that he was appointed by President Roosevelt,to the UN Charter Conference in San Francisco in 1945.
It is Eaton’s signature on the United Nations Charter that represents the United States. Retired in 1953 at the age of 84, and he received tributes from Presidents, Secretaries of States, Senators, and from members of his beloved House who gave him a long standing ovation.
