Wetumpka Falls
Presented by Sue Tucker,"Watchung's Most Experienced Realtor"
In the 20th century, one of Watchung's most treasured features was Wetumpka Falls. Nature provided a tumble of rocks and the quarry owners enhanced that, creating a tall and lovely waterfall that provided water for the quarry where the police station is located today.
Wetumpka Falls became a tourist destination, a place to have picnics and the focus of many postcards, early photos and paintings. But nature won out in the flash flood on August (2 or 3) 1973, which devastated the Watchung circle area, where two streams join and rush down Somerset Street, carrying cars, trees, huge hunks of pavement, the Texier garage. Man's work crumbled away, and Wetumpka Falls returned to its natural state. The town has created a small lookout spot, opposite the current Department of Public Works building on Somerset Street, but trees really mask the view of what's left of Wetumpka Falls.
