Watchung self-tour walking and/or driving app

Objective:

Create a Watchung self-tour walking and/or driving app. To create an engaging and informative app, here are some steps you can take:

  1. Research the nearly 100 year history of Watchung: Begin by gathering information that includes, but not limited to its role in the Revolutionary War, the name of the lands before Watchung was incorporated in 1926, industry, development, and into current events. You can use sources located at the Texier House Museum (and beyond) including, but not limited to, letters, diaries, and historical records to help craft a compelling narrative. Utilize/build off of an existing scavenger hunt created under the direction of the Historical Committee (for a Girl Scout Gold Award Project) for this project that includes many places in the Borough.

  2. Identify important sites and landmarks. Based on your research, identify the most significant sites and landmarks that you want to include in the walking and/or driving tour.

  3. Plan the route: Once you have identified the sites and landmarks, plan a route that takes visitors to each location. Ensure the route is easy to follow, and safe for pedestrian access if it is a walking tour. Consider locations most relevant for QR codes and where they can be installed or attached to.

  4. Content: Develop content and a brief narrative for each site and landmark (brief history/interesting facts/anecdotes). Consider including photos, videos, and other multimedia to enhance the visitor experience.

  5. Script/Narrate the tour: Write a script for the tour that incorporates the content/narrative you have developed for each site. Record narration for the tour with a local audio engineer.

  6. Build the app: Look at different options/platforms. Use the platform you decide (like Appy Pie) to build the app. Include the route map, site descriptions, and audio narration in the app with QR codes at the sites chosen.

  7. Test the app: Test the app to ensure it functions properly and is easy to use.

Requirements:

  • Programming skills and experience creating mobile apps.

  • Writing/narrative/storytelling abilities.

  • An interest in history and museum exhibits.

  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with museum staff.

  • Ability to do your own research and draw conclusions from conflicting information.

Takeaway:

Creating a Watchung walking self-tour app requires careful planning, research, and attention to detail. This is an opportunity for a high school student or groups of high school students to showcase their talents while completing an important community service project.
